Did Demonstrations in Northern Belize Increase U.D.P. Municipal Chances?

With municipal elections scheduled to take place less than seven weeks from now, Barrow was asked if he believes the People’s United Party lost ground in the north as a result of the tensions that arose between the B.S.C.F.A. and A.S.R./B.S.I. A majority of the constituencies in northern Belize have long been considered P.U.P. strongholds. But, during that intense period of demonstration, several cane farmers spoke publicly against Prime Minister Briceño and the People’s United Party. Barrow says that was only a taste of the message Belizeans will send to the ruling P.U.P. on March sixth.

“What has happened with the caneros has added to the overall vulnerability of the People’s United Party. But I would not just use it as a vacuum example. It is not as if that is the only thing that is eroding the public trust and confidence in the People’s United Party. I’ll go to “Muncho” Cervantes where we won San Jose in 2022 and a few other councils in Orange Walk and as the Orange Walk UDP Town Seven are campaigning, the complaints and cries of abandonment, neglect and the highest cost of living ever. So when you see the type of frustration, you heard the women caneros, the family members just lambasting Briceno and the PUP, that the only time they know when to come to see them and talk to them and face them is when it is time for elections and after election they abandon them, I didn’t say that, I don’t know that woman. And the BCSFA is known or alleged to be a PUP dominated association. So you heard it for yourself and you will see in March.”
