COMPOL Says Trevor Brown Shooting Was Self-Defense

During the New Year’s weekend, twenty-eight-year-old Trevor Brown was fatally shot as he left the parking lot of a popular nightclub in Belize City. After reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions determined that Brown was killed out of self-defense. Being that the bullet wound was found in Brown’s back, questions are still being posed by the victim’s mother as to whether the shooting was truly an act of self-defense. Here’s what Commissioner of Police Chester Williams had to say.

“The law does give one the opportunity to make a preemptive strike. I noticed that many people are saying that it was the other young man who fired first but if you see a man coming towards you with a gun in his hand, in a rage, are you going to wait for him to shoot you before you shoot back? You might not have that chance. So the law, do give you that opportunity to make a preemptive strike. I could understand what the mother of Trevor Brown is saying, and I don’t want to say nothing to offend her. She have a right to say what she is saying, but we can only be guided by the facts as we see them. And the video footage and the statements were sent to the DPP office, and the DPP office made that determination, not the police, and we are guided by that.”
