San Pedro Area Rep Says He and Mayor Work Well Together
The election season is about to enter prime time and political parties are sharpening their political teeth to run those ads, as they always do, about their opponents. And as they prepare to step out into the streets and homes of the electorate, they will no doubt attempt to discredit their political rivals. In San Pedro, there have been a few reports that even the incumbents, Area Representative Andre Perez and Mayor Wally Nunez; have not been on the same page. But today, following a press conference called by the mayor, Perez told the media that like most other teams, they can agree to disagree and that this San Pedro Town Council is a strong team that the people voted for in 2021.
Andre Perez, Area Representative, Belize Rural South
“It is evident that this municipality made the right choice in putting in Mayor Wally and his team back in 2021. And we knew, and they knew, and we all knew that San Pedro has a very much, a very strong revenue base. We knew that way back in 2018 when I was running as Mayor if you recall, so we knew that on that strength, we would be able to be making things a turnaround, providing we have a strong management team. And today, the town council has displayed that already, in all its glory. However, we don’t want to just stay on what we are making, and as you rightly asked the question there about government getting involved, that is also key, that we have central government getting involved as it relates to the bonds, as it relates to further development that occurs in this municipality. So again, it’s hand in hand working, myself as the Area Rep, the Council, and Central Government as well. Both myself and the mayor know who’s really in charge in terms of as it relates to his municipality and what is my role as a representative. We both know what roles we play. And certainly we can, at times, agree to disagree, you know, there are disagreements, nothing is wrong with that, but that’s healthy. But we always meet, we discuss, we always have quarterly discussions, and there’s always a way to pave the way forward.”
