Good Governance Unit Present Policy Papers on Campaign Financing
Minister Usher, who is also the Chairman of the P.U.P., was asked when the government will set in place some policy governing the matter of campaign financing. Around election time, political parties receive funds for their electioneering from sponsors far and wide and this has become a concern for many who believe there ought to be transparency on who provides these funds. Today, Minister Usher said the Good Governance Unit is about to present a policy paper on that issue.
Henry Charles Usher, Cabinet Minister
“The Good Governance Unit has been working to prepare some policy papers on campaign financing, doing comparisons of what the laws are in other areas in the Caribbean, and around the world. [We’ve also been] reviewing the paper that was sent by the Belize Chamber of Commerce. Hopefully we can get that policy into a Cabinet paper and we see some progress on that. On Wednesday, next week, there is a anti-corruption declaration being released, and that is one of the specific points that they want to achieve in this declaration.”
