Horrific traffic accident on Northern Highway

11jan10-5An accident on Northern Highway on Friday night caused traffic congestion on that main artery, but fortunately there was no loss of life. It involved thirty-seven year old Colin Mejia, a construction worker and a thirty-seven year old nurse, Christine Young. It was a close call and it landed Young in the hospital. According to Police Corporal Jorge Lemus, excessive use of alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the accident which occurred between miles six and seven.

Corporal Jorge Lemus, Ladyville Police Formation
“As a result Ladyville police visited the scene where upon arrival they noticed a white Isuzu Rodeo and a gold in color Chrysler Voyager Van both having extensive damages to the front side of the vehicle. The initial investigation reveals that the Isuzu Rodeo was travelling from a direction of Ladyville towards Belize City and the van was travelling from Belize City to Ladyville where upon reaching the curve, they collided. At this time a male was driving the vehicle, and a female was driving the Isuzu Rodeo. The female driver suffered injuries to the pelvic area, the right wrist and to the leg region. Our investigation has led us to take blood samples from both drivers and has been handed over to the forensic department for their analysis.”

“The extent of the injuries?”

Cpl. Jorge Lemus
“At this time the female is admitted to K.H.M.H. receiving treatment to injuries to her pelvic area.”

Jose Sanchez
“Has any information regarding alcohol involvement reached your desk?”

Cpl. Jorge Lemus
“At this time, that is the reason why we have taken blood samples from both drivers and sent them to the forensic lab. They will do the testing and give us their findings.”

Jose Sanchez
“And do you expect charges to be levied against any of these individuals?”

Cpl. Jorge Lemus
“At this time we have issued notice of intended prosecution to both drivers. Our investigation continues and charges may follow.”

Young is still in the hospital receiving treatment for a fracture to her hip.
