Portion of historic house being torn down
And on Regent Street, a building sitting at the corner with South Street is in danger of collapsing. Its owners, the Eusey Family, are fighting its demolition because that would leave them homeless. Last Thursday, the city engineer informed the Belize City Council of the imminent collapse and that portion of South Street was blocked from traffic. The dilapidated building was once an attractive structure adorned with shingles on the outer walls and fortified with a brick cellar for emergency use as most buildings during the period it was built. It is one of the few remaining buildings that carried the architecture of an age when British Honduras was a colony of England. But as the rule of the empire fell, so have the walls of part of the building that has now decayed and collapsed. The city council has given the go ahead to destroy an additional section that was added or annexed to the building. When our news team passed by this evening, workers were taking down the annex to comply with the city’s regulation. Though a portion has been torn down, the building has been the home of the Eusey family for at least fifty years. And tonight they continue to reside there.
