A.C.C. students recognized for academic performance

26351A.C.C. students who earned more than eighty percent in their first term grades were recognized for their academic performance today. The Anglican Cathedral College says it is also a way of motivating other students to improve their scores. The top scorer, a first year student, was granted a scholarship for the remaining years of study at the college. The ceremony was attended by the entire student body and News Five’s Duane Moody found the honorees beaming with pride.

Twenty-nine outstanding students—ten males and nineteen females—were honored for a job well done during the first term of the school year. The students were recognized for acquiring the top two spots in subject areas as well as their overall performance for the term.

Tanisha Sylvestre, Chairperson, Awards Committee, A.C.C.
“There are standards for the awards committee and one of those standards is definitely first and second place in the subjects. It is a tedious task because we have to go through all the first place and second place and we would have to rank them according to the particular student in accordance with the amount of merits they received. So it is a tedious task and the honor roll students are highlighted because they have attained an average of eighty percent and above without failing any of the subjects that they are taking.”

Of the twenty-nine awardees, fourteen came from the first form classes with Valerie Valerio and Astrid Zelaya coming on top for the entire student body.

Valerie Valerio, Most Outstanding Student, A.C.C.
“For the Academic Excellence, first in class, English language, literature, second in math, first in physical education and award of excellence for being on the honor roll.”

Duane Moody
“What did it take to receive those awards and to be the best overall for the school?”

Valerie Valerio
“I just study.”

Duane Moody
“And how does that make you feel to know that you did surpass everybody else?”

Valerie Valerio
“Proud of myself.”

Duane Moody
“How does it feel to be the second best student in the entire school?”

Astrid Zelaya, 2nd Most Outstanding Student, A.C.C.
Well I don’t have words to explain myself since I am still in shock. The best word that I can explain myself is happy because I never would have think that I would be the second place of the entire school.”

Fourth form student, Edgar Lopez, came in third overall and says he anticipated that he would have done well.

Edgar Lopez, 3rd most Outstanding Student, A.C.C.
“I excelled in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, which were my majors. I’m very proud of myself, I really worked hard and I really think I did deserve it. I am just going to continue working hard. I am in fourth form and I currently want to attend sixth form so I wanna have good grades, I don’t wanna have any problems to get in so I wanna work hard. I think my motivation is the career that I wanna take. I wanna study medicine so I know I need to do good from high school, sixth form so I can reach where I wanna be.”

According to Chairperson of the Awards Committee, Tanisha Sylvestre, the most outstanding student received a scholarship to continue attending the high school.

Tanisha Sylvestre
“We have the first place students receiving a white card that states what subject area they came in first and the particular class with the subject teacher’s signature signed on it then we had a little gift for honor roll students. Then we had gifts for first and second place in the entire school. Astrid received a set of books from Anglican Cathedral College and we have Valerie Valerio receiving a scholarship from the Minister of Education, Honorable Patrick Faber and she also received a savings account from First Caribbean Bank.”

And if you were wondering why the students were not dressed in uniforms, it is because the school organized a Rags Day to raise funds for the earthquake victims by contributing two dollars each. Duane Moody, reporting for News Five.
