Mexican Embassy sponsors drawing contest for students

Story PictureThe Mexican Embassy is sponsoring a drawing contest that is open to all primary school children throughout the country. The competition started on Tuesday and is part of the embassy’s mission to promote mutual understanding of the history and culture of both Belize and Mexico. Doctor Gina Aguilar, one of the organizers of the contest, says that in addition to the artwork being used in a display, the winner will receive an eight day, all expenses paid trip to Mexico City.

Dr. Gina Aguilar, Technical Scientific Cooperation, Embassy of Mexico
“The purpose of this contest is to link and to open more about the history of Belize and Mexico and the history in Mexico about Belize. This is a launch from the Mexican Embassy and it will be held this year. We will send letters to primary schools for children between eight and twelve years of age. So they can send to Mexico their paintings and now we have the new thing; what do you know about the Mexican Revolution of 1910?”

“Why this particular theme?”

Dr. Gina Aguilar
“Because next year both celebrations we’re going to have in 2010 will be two hundred years of independence and one year about the revolution in Mexico that happened a hundred years ago. So what we want to know is what the children of Belize, what they really know about our heroes; about what happened in 1910.”

“But to inspire them you also have a prize?”

Dr. Gina Aguilar
“It is very interesting. It consists of one week to Mexico City with a family member. We will pay all the trip and they will be looking at cultural and at Mexico City from the government of Mexico City. The more we receive paintings from the children we will know how many of them know about Mexico, about our culture and revolution, about our history and it’s interesting because we want to give more.”

Aguilar says that the embassy will provide details to all primary schools via the Ministry of Education. If your child would like to receive the information as soon as possible you can reach Aguilar at the Institute of Mexico in Belize City or at phone number 223-1408.
