The national male softball team gets new head coach

There is a new head coach for the senior male softball national team. On Saturday, the executive council of the Belize Softball Federation named veteran softball player, Nelberth Flowers, to head the team. Flowers has a long trajectory in the sport and has played for the jewel in several regional games. He was a member of the national team when it won the bronze medal in the Central American Games back in 1997.  Flowers will be giving up his third base position and will be working on sharpening the skills of the national team in time for the March Central American Games in Panama. As new head coach, Flowers says his strategy will be to go back to the fundamental techniques of the sport.

“As a player, it gives me great responsibility and most of the players that are on the team use to be my fellow teammates. So the transition should be smooth. We will change from a power team to a more basically hit, bunt and get across—a more small ball instead of big ball.”

Duane Moody

“Explain dat fi mi. give me more…”

Nelberth Flowers

“In regards to the small ball it is bunt get them on and bring them over. But in regards to the power team—it’s not gonna rely on homerun, it will rely on the basic elements of the game which is bunt, sacrifice and everything.”

Duane Moody

“What is it that you’re going to bring to that is different that will help you guys win?”

Nelberth Flowers

“The stuff that causes us not to win is errors. We didn’t stay focused for couple hours. In this tournament we are trying to stay focused at least to an hour and a half, two hours in the game then we can do it.”
