Several traffic accidents caused by wet roads

Rains in the past few days have been causing slippery roads and highways and a taxi driver lost his life and two others are badly injured following a head-on collision between a delivery truck and a green Astrovan. The incident occurred around nine-forty on Thursday night near mile twenty-five on the Western Highway.

The taxi driver, forty-one year old Staford Burgess was heading from Belize City to his home in Mahogany Heights when the collision took place. Burgess’ vehicle received extensive damage to the driver’s side and he was killed on impact. The delivery truck was heading towards Belize City and was driven by thirty-two year old Herman Blats of Orange Walk Town. Blats and a passenger, twenty-four year old Saul Santos, suffered injuries to the face and chest and were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they remain in serious but stable condition.

At least three more traffic mishaps occurred between Thursday night and this morning on the slick Western highway. Not far from the fatal incident near mile twenty-five we encountered another collision of two vehicles and further down near mile thirty-three this grey van ran off the road and flipped. There are no reports of serious injuries in these last two incidents. Earlier, a white SUV was removed from the bushes near mile thirty-two after its driver lost control and also ran off the road. Drivers are urged to exercise caution when using the nation’s highways this wet weekend.
