Hail of gunfire ends basketball game; 2 injured
And in a shooting spree in the city, two persons are recovering from bullet wounds after they were injured while playing basketball at the newly upgraded Euphrates Basketball Court. Sometime around eight Sunday morning, several persons including twenty-seven year old Gavin Zuniga and twenty-four year old Bernard Felix were on the court when at least one gunman approached the facility and unleashed a barrage of bullets in their direction. The group scurried for cover, but Zuniga and Felix were hit in the back and right arm. One witness who luckily managed to dodge the bullets is Geovannie Brackett who is still reeling from the shooting.

“We went there probably about six-thirty, a quarter to seven, but around after eight while I was waiting to play basketball, that’s when several shots started being fired at court. I couldn’t see a shooter but immediately my instincts told me to hit the ground because bullets would normally fly overhead at a higher altitude. It was at least fifteen to twenty shots that went off. Guys just started to jump the fence but I didn’t want to jump the fence because I didn’t want to risk getting shot in the back and guys jumped the fence both left and right. And when I thought the shots had stop, I got up and then the shots started firing again and that’s when I fell to the ground and then I made a way to jump the fence and come around the back when I thought the shots were fired. Two guys were injured; one of them being my friend who has no relations to any gang. Most of the guys out there were guys who worked hard and were just out there to get a good exercise. He got shot in the back. Two bullets went into his back and came out two separate places, but thank God it didn’t hit any vital organs.”

“Gavin Zuniga. I couldn’t see any shooter from the angle that I was. Word was just that a young man in a white shirt opened fire. He wasn’t on a bicycle, he came out walking.”
According to Police Press Officer, Clement Palacio, two minors have been detained pending further investigation. While the expended shells were scattered on the street, the weapon has not been located nor is the motive for the shooting known.
