BNE executive speaks about safety measures in oil industry

Dr. Gilbert Canton
Where is it and how much? That’s the questions that keep popping up when the topic of revenues from the oil industry is discussed. Dr. Gilbert Canton, the CEO of Belize Natural Energy today spoke of the “crude facts” about the industry when he took the couch on our morning show. And while the jury is still out on who gets what and how much, we did ask Canton if BNE is prepared for an accident spillage. According to Canton, they have been trained to deal with any such eventuality.

“In terms of our health and safety and environmental matters, we hold that sacred and I think we put a tremendous amount of effort into it. If you look at our trucks, you’ll see that they are really up beyond what is required of those standards. We have a satellite tracking system that tracks those trucks from they leave that operation until they get to Big Creek and they return. So we know when they are going above forty miles per hour, which is where we set their limit at. We know where they are stopping; we monitor those things very, very carefully. We have a full response team that has been trained for that. We have a fire team that we’ve sent abroad to study. These guys are probably some of the best trained firemen in the country. We send them abroad; we get them all trained up and everything like that. We put a tremendous effort in making sure we have people on board and the equipment and apparatus and resources available to them to be able to deal with when there is any kind of spill. If you remember when that tank that turned over on the Western Highway. Who responded? It was BNE that was there making sure we had the monitors to go out and monitor whatever levels of emissions might be going around. We have all that. We’ve done a lot of studies like for example, risk studies of going down the Hummingbird Highway. What happens if a truck overturns in the area, where will the oil go? How can we contain it? We have all those mitigation and response plans prepared and in place to respond to any kind of situation like that.”
