Papaya container turns over on Northern Highway

Story PictureA traffic mishap around ten this morning on the Northern Highway did not result in any injuries but did register a significant loss for the owners of Little Belize Exporters, a papaya shipping company from Little Belize in the Corozal District. The truck, which belonged to Wilbert Valencia’s Trucking, was being driven by Carlos Perez. Perez told News Five he was transporting a container load of papayas for shipment abroad and on reaching the curve at mile six and a half on the Northern Highway, he lost control of the towhead on which the container was set. As a result, the back of the towhead skidded across the highway and overturned. Luckily there was no other vehicle coming in the opposite direction and Perez himself was not hurt.

Carlos Perez, Driver
“Well when I took the turn, one of the pins loose from there and this holds the trailer and I couldn’t control the rear of the truck and the container turned over on the side. This just happened recently. It has papaya; twenty-eight crates. It is for abroad, it is exported but with this, all the papaya is destroyed. We are waiting for someone to lift the container. Within an hour and a half the help will come to lift the container. I don’t know what else to say. The vehicle is good, nothing happened to it. The problem is the container that is on the side.”

We understand the shipment was worth more than twenty thousand dollars.
