Drivers for bus companies go head to head in traffic

busesThe perennial rivalry between two Belize City-based bus companies came to a head this morning at the roundabout near the Northern Highway leaving more than a few disgruntled passengers stuck in the middle of traffic.  Shortly after ten o’clock two inbound shuttles belonging to Lopez Bus Company and Northern Transport collided into each other when the driver of the Northern Transport bus attempted to overtake the other driver.  No one was hurt but the drivers got into a heated verbal exchange.  Police and traffic officers were called to the scene shortly after the incident and both drivers were escorted to the Raccoon Street Police Station.  We caught up with Dexter Hemans of Northern Transport who told News Five that the other bus driver was at fault.

“I was coming towards Belcan Bridge and a Lopez Bus was on the right hand side, I was on the left and just before approaching the pedestrian ramp he actually pulled into my lane right.  I think you guys got the footage already so everybody could see what happened.  He’s plainly in the wrong.”

“When he cut into your lane what did you do?”

Dexter Hemans

“Well I stopped to cause no further damage to my vehicle no.”

Isani Cayetano

“What were those damages?”

Dexter Hemans

“Well it broke my mirror and scratched up the side of my van.”

Isani Cayetano

“What was the reaction of the passengers onboard your vehicle?”

Dexter Hemans

“Well everybody said that that man is a crazy man.  He shouldn’t have a driver’s license.  He’s always, always doing a lot of stupidness out there.  So much times he catches in altercations with fu we bus, always di do a lot a simpleness; blocking the road, obstructing the free flow of traffic all the time, punching our drivers.  We… our company have just had enough of this individual.”

It is not known if any charges will be placed against the drivers of the busses.
