Belize Hydroelectric worked halted by Ya’axchѐ judicial review
There is one more case to add to the mounting litigation against the government and it is coming from the environmentalists. This afternoon the Chief Justice, Dr. Abdulai Conteh, granted Ya’axchѐ Conservation Trust permission to bring judicial review proceedings against the Government of Belize. Ya’axchѐ believes that the Hydroelectric Development Company was given a license to conduct certain studies in the Bladen Nature Reserve in breach of the National Parks Act. Ya’axchѐ has been co-managing the Bladen Forest Reserve for years and insists that the proper procedure must be followed in order to prevent devastation of the nature reserve. The outcome of the judicial review proceedings will determine whether the hydroelectric company will be able to continue with its work or will have to commence afresh. Representing Ya’axchѐ was Magali Marin Young while Priscilla Banner represented GOB.
