Belize/Guatemala agreement to provide more opportunities

The agreement will provide better trading opportunities and Coleman says the delay in passage of the agreement was with the Guatemalan congress.

“I know at the technical level we were informed that there were some real glitches in terms of there is a specific committee within the congress that reviews trade agreements and I think in one instance the agreements somehow got sidetracked or didn’t get there in time or went to the wrong committee. From another point of view, you could say the political situation simply did not allow for it to get ratified at that point in time or within these three years.”

Whether or not the agreement will have any bearing on the territorial claim that Guatemala has on Belize is not known but it does open up new opportunities for the private sectors in both countries.
