James Adderley has weekend sports

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and here’s this week’s portion of Sports Monday.

The Belize Bank Super League of Football took a break over the weekend and indeed so did many other sporting competitions as the nation observed Christmas celebrations. So folks, we take this particular opportunity to highlight the Super League Tournament which is only three weeks away from the post season. The league is led by a six man committee led by Tony Zabaneh who is the chairman, Ruperto Vicente is the Assistant Chairman, Michael Blease is League Administrator with Chris Coye, Nicholas Pollard Jr., and Onan McClean members of the brain thrust.

Michael Blease, League Administrator
“At this moment our tournament is comprised of most of the young talent in Belize. We have a lot of the senior guys who are now starting to come over the Belize Bank Super League Tournament. We have great participation with our clubs and this year is a little but more competitive than what we had last year. We have three weeks to go in the regular season and then we go into the four team playoffs.”

Folks, after fifteen weeks the defending champion Texmar Boys continues to lead with thirty-nine points, San Felipe Barcelona has thirty-two, Kraal Road F.C. twenty-seven, Valley Renaissance twenty-three, Cayo South United eighteen, Lake-Collet Survivors seventeen, Barrio Fino sixteen, while both Tsunami and Lucky Strike are tied in the cellar with eleven points apiece.

In the meantime people, the Vice Chair Ruperto Vicente certainly is locked in on the future of Belizean football.

Ruperto Vicente, Vice Chairman
“I’ve grown up in football, I love the sport. This is the sport that rescued me from the world of the streets. If it had not been for football I would not have been the person I am today. Because of football, I am who I am with discipline I bring to the Super League and the reason I am involved is because I want to see young people develop the same kind of discipline I developed when I started football. This sport, I believe, makes a future out of young people. I believe, James, that we should focus on developing young players and for this reason the Super League. The Super League seeks to develop the young players who have been left out by the B.P.F.L., who have been left out by the F.F.B. and we believe that if we focus on developing these young people they can become the best football players in Belize.”

“But what can you promise them at this point?”

Ruperto Vicente
“At this point we are promising them development. Development, it’s as simple as that because that is what we need in Belize and in Belizean football. We need our youths developed and the reason we’re not performing well on the international scene is because we have not developed our young players. If we focus on developing our young players then rest assured we can do well against international teams.”

Ruperto Vicente was defeated by Dr. Bertie Chimilio for the presidency of the Football Federation of Belize in the last national elections. However, he has not given up this ambition.

Ruperto Vicente
“I want to see football develop in Belize. I believe I have had enough training, I have enough experience to lead the Football Federation of Belize and to make the best of football in the country of Belize. In the next election is going to be in 2010 and I’m preparing for it.”

By the way folks, if you want to check out the Super League of soccer here’s the schedule for week sixteen and it’s all set for this Sunday, January fourth 2009. Tsunami F.C. will host Texmar Boys out at the island, Lake-Collet Survivors travels to Cayo South United at roaring Creek, Valley Renaissance will be inside the Carl Ramos Stadium to take on San Felipe Barcelona and Kraal Road will host Barrio Fino inside the M.C.C. Grounds.

Hey folks, that’s our show for today though. Before we go we want to wish you a happy and prosperous New Year. That’s it. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
