Landings 10, contemporary art, leaves the stratosphere

landings 10You have heard of Landings One, Two, three …all the way to nine, and now there is Landings Ten. The project Zero, at its completion, brought together the international artists that had participated in the exhibitions for the Landings project. Landings Ten is really a graphic text, the final work in the series of the artists’ perspective that the planet is not the final landing, but in fact it is a takeoff for contemporary art. News Five Jose Sanchez was at the Image Factory this morning and spoke to Landings curator, Joan Duran.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

Landings Ten is the tenth edition of a project which has the collaboration of artists across the planet. The creations are well packaged such as the cargo of narco-traffickers on its way through the Americas to be broadcast uncut to the world.  But when the works land, the artists intend to make your mind fly as is visible on the first few pages of Landings.

Joan Duran, Curator, Landings 10

“A country needs a component of contemporary art. It’s a puzzle, pieces; we have economic development, we have banking, health, bla, bla, bla. Where is contemporary art? Nowhere to be seen. So Landings is a response to that because I believe that this will take many years, decades in fact, generations because we should not confuse applied art; trinkets, paintings and little handy crafts. That’s very good; every country should have or I believe they have that kind of thing. But the art we are into is art for the spirit, for the soul, art that will feed our brain that certainly needs a lot of food to develop better ideas for ourselves to come out with better ideas on everything. So artists, not only for those that we think are art lovers, no my friend art should be for everybody because once you are fed by profound and serious art, that will affect your life.”

“I am hungry what in this book will fill me?”

“In fact I have not even opened it because since I am the whole creator of the project, even with the works from the other artists, I have no judgment that’s why it’s…”

Jose Sanchez

“Like God?”

Joan Duran

“No, no. you see because Yasser has the constraint of going back to St. Johns or whatever he’s teaching or something, I wanted Yasser as part of Landings but not the book maker; talk about that book. Whenever I make a book I think it’s a disaster and every time I make a book, I sent copies to people that I have thought to make them criticize.”

Jose Sanchez

“This one is landings, it didn’t crash?”

Joan Duran
“No, because Landings—okay can I play little cheap poetry? In Landings there is no touchdown. Landings is a permanent take off. Imagine a plane with a special fuel from another galaxy because touchdown is needed for a flight and we are on a permanent flight on whatever orbit.”

Some of the images are literal eye openers, and like the conquistadores depicted in the text, JD the creator, hopes to colonize and expand your mind.

Joan Duran

Landings proves that with profound dedication, with a lot of criticism among ourselves, hard work, never be satisfied with what we’ve done the first time, the second time and the hundredth time. we, people from the Caribbean, young artists from the Caribbean and Central America are able to produce plus stage, put them out for people to see first class work, second to no one.”

Reporting for News Five Jose Sanchez.

Landings, ten and all previous publications are available at the Image Factory and anywhere fine art books are sold.
