Football, basketball, cycling… all in weekend sports

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked on to this ride we call Sports Monday.

Week fourteen of the Belize Bank Football Super League Tournament brought the cache of Belize City teams inside the M.C.C. Ground yesterday as Kraal Road took on Lake-Collet Survivors. Folks, we’re only six minutes into the action when defense man Denroy Lopez floats this spot kick into the danger zone that drops behind the raised hands of the goalkeeper to give Kraal Road a quick 1-zip lead. Some seven minutes later Jason Young gets this look at goal from the left side, the goalkeeper pushes it out but right to Leon Jones who doubles the lead for Kraal Road. Now this is hard to fathom people, Raymond Gentle does everything right here, beating the keeper only to see the ball deflect off the defensive player in goal. Lake-Collet now needs a goal so Paul Bradley picks out Dennis Myvette who embarrasses himself on the attempt. In the meantime, the goalkeeper for Lake-Collet has no one to blame but himself when Leon Jones slams this ball into an empty net to get his second goal of the match to give Kraal Road a commanding 3-zip lead thirty-three minutes in. when Paul Bradley is taken down inside the eighteen by Alexander Belisle, the penalty call is easy to be made by the referee. Up steps that wily veteran David McCauley who beats Eldon Linares to get the Survivors onto the scoreboard at the fortieth minute from the penalty spot. Two minutes later, Mr. Fabulous, Paul Bradley makes this impressive run then beats the keeper to shake an empty net and at the half Lake-Collet is only down 3-2 people. It’s a pumped up survival w hen play resumes and Joseph Mohammedali really should have done better with this look from point blank range. We’re at the sixtieth minute of this come back when Kevin Rowland sets table perfectly for Dennis Myvette who completes the combat for the Survivors from three down and who would have thought it? However, the drama is only beginning. At the eighty-sixth minute, Jarrett Davis shows off his left foot and Kraal Road recaptures the lead but not for long because in the next minute Kevin Rowland benefits from poor defensive play to tie this ballgame at four goals apiece. Of course, it’s not over ‘til it’s over and at the ninetieth minute of this action Denfield Lemoth centers across the goal mouth, Lorenzo Diaz stomps it in. It is the game winner. Kraal Road wins 5-4 against a game Lake-Collet Survivors team.

In other action around the league, Texmar Boys blasted Barrio Fino 6-zip, Tsunami F.C. clubbed Lucky Strike Black Orchid 6-3 and Valley Renaissance beat out a 1-zip big W over Cayo South United. After fourteen weeks the standings look like this: Texmar Boys continue to lead but they now have thirty-nine points, San Felipe is next with twenty-nine, Kraal Road now has twenty-four, Valley Renaissance twenty-two, Cayo South United seventeen, both Lake-Collet and Barrio Fino show sixteen points apiece, Tsunami F.C. eleven and Lucky Strike Black Orchid find themselves in the cellar with a mere ten points.

This week’s schedule finds Texmar Boys in action against Kraal Road at Independence; that’s on Saturday night and on Sunday Lucky Strike will host Cayo South United. Tsunami F.C. will visit San Felipe and Lake-Collet will take on Valley Renaissance inside the M.C.C. grounds.

Turning to the basketball scene, Maxi-Basket inside the City Center complete regular season play yesterday as the door was shut on a few teams with playoff ambitions. Belmopan had its way with B.W.S. Bulls who were barbequed 78-64 on a twenty-four point performance from Alfonso Audinet. Classic Purex edged Maria Chang to make the post season in a 56-54 squeaker. Old Cemetery sent O.W. Running Rebels to the gulf course in a 70-59 finish and in the class of undefeated teams, Alberts emerged with a clean sheet by downing rival Old Technical Rebels 67-55 led by twenty-seven points from Lloyd Leslie. Please not people, in three Maxi-Basketball seasons so far, Alberts has yet to lose a much. Thus the playoffs kick off on Sunday at the City Center with four and three Old Cemetery facing two and five Belmopan while Classic Purex goes to work against B.W.S.
