P.U.P. to hold consultations on proposed tax increase
You have heard about the proposed increase in business tax, and today the opposition People’s United Party, issued a release announcing that the P.U.P. will be meeting with relevant stakeholders to discuss the proposed tax hike which the government intends to impose on the banking sector and on the telecommunications industry.
According to the P.U.P., the consultations are taking place to give the opposition the perspective of stakeholders before it firms up a position on the tax increase. The consultations are scheduled with two commercial banks, Atlantic and Belize Bank, and in the telecom industry with Telemedia, Speednet and Mirrornet. The P.U.P. says it will also be meeting with visiting representatives from Digicell, who are looking to invest in Belize. The proposal to increase the tax by five point five percent will be debated when the House of Representatives meets on December twelfth.
