18 year old shot while taking leisurely walk
A walk by a group of friends last night ended in chaos. Eighteen year old Christine Dawson was walking near a basketball court in Santa Elena, Cayo around eight-thirty Tuesday night with some friends when she was injured in a shooting. She was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery today. Her mother, who gave us an off-camera interview, explained her daughter’s scrape with death.

“The little that my daughter was able to say because she could hardly speak when I got to the hospital. Her friend was the one that filled me more. She said that they just stepped out of her yard. She was about to take her daughter back home and she stepped back because all three of them couldn’t walk the way they were walking. So the friend stepped backed there and as she stepped back there was the sound of a gunshot, right. And then there was a young man on a bicycle right next to them, he got shot in his buttocks I think, and then my daughter got hit in the back. She fell to the ground when it happened, understand, and the she started to bleed and stuff. And then some passerby picked her up and took her to the hospital.”

“Did they tell you if this was a random act or someone was out to get the guy?”
Mother of Shooting Victim
“I really don’t know, that I really don’t know because there was a lot of people around. They just heard the shot and next thing you know two people were shot.”

“And the condition of your daughter, what has the doctor said, what has she been through so far?”
Mother of Shooting Victim
“Well, so far I’ve gathered from the doctor in San Ignacio, she was shot in her back, it went through her side by her intestine by her stomach area. The bullet went in through the back and came out the side of her. One of her lungs was punctured and then she had internal bleeding.”
Dawson is now in recovery at the K.H.M.H. and the police are investigating this latest shooting.
