Monday night sports review with James Adderley
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re certainly welcome to this package of Sports Monday.
The B.P.F.L. Regent Cup championship series has hit a serious snag resulting from game two of the series between F.C. Belize and Llagulei at Dangriga on Tuesday November eighteenth. According to the league president, Omario Perdomo Junior, Kareem Haylock, captain of the Griga team had accumulated three yellow cards going into game one of the series and went on to start in game two. Lionel Welch of F.C. Belize launched the protest before game whistle time Tuesday night and Haylock was still allowed to play. The problem here is that the executive of the football Federation of Belize, which is in charge of setting up the protest board, is expected to return from panama after a very poor showing by the nation under seventeen football team at the UNCAF under seventeen Regional Tournament. This means we should see some action on the field this Sunday so stay tuned.
Turning to the Super League of Belize, week eleven saw the conclusion of all five matches scheduled. We take you out to the M.C.C. Grounds where Kraal Road F.C. played host to Cayo South United. And we’re fifteen minutes in when Michael Diaz directs this swing into the danger zone. The ball is kept alive by Jack Dawson to Leon Jones whose launch deflected off a defender only to crash into the net as Kraal Road grabs the 1-zip lead. It’s more Kraal Road as Dawson attacks off the right wing but this time Jeremy Twist handles the situation. Give Eden Linarez credit as here he uses his foot convincingly to come up with a crucial save against Deon Guzman of Cayo South. At the half we’ve got a 1-nil Kraal Road lead.
Right off the kickoff the city team attacks via number ten, Raymond Gentle and again Jeremy Twist makes that stop. We must ask Leon Jones what went wrong when he botches this really nice look at goal. In the meantime, Lenarez’s take down of Enrique Tamai inside the eighteen looks like a penalty to us but the referee rules play one. Delroy Andrews then gets his chance to shine for the city, instead he raises the pill over the crossbar. On this Kraal Road press, Raymond Gentle does everything right until his strike is timed perfectly by that wily veteran Earl Peter. Five minutes later Leon Jones gets to the ball in time but raises the ball over the sticks in his attempt at scoring. At the seventieth minute Raymond Gentle finds Denfield Lemoth on the right side and just like that Kraal Road goes up 2-nil. Here’s a bit of side show for you fans, Denroy Lopez puts a body on Avery Garcia who responds most unkindly for which he gets chased to the sidelines. Folks, the dreaded auto goal almost lands on Kraal Road when Wayne Wiltshire fires this bomb but the deflection off the defense inches outside the sticks. In extra-time Cayo South pulls one back when this left foot from Enrique Tamai beats Linarez but it proves to be a case of too little to late as Kraal Road comes away with the 2-1 big W.
In other action around the league, Texmar Boys stopped Lake-Collet Survivors 3-2, Tsunami FC burned Barrio Fino 1-zip, Valley Renaissance and Western Rebels battled to a scoreless stalemate while San Felipe Barcelona blanked Lucky Strike 3-zip. On week twelve’s schedule Valley Renaissance will host Kraal Road, Lucky Strike travels to Texmar, and Lake-Collet Survivors will get a visit from Barrio Fino; all on Saturday. On Sunday Western Rebels travels to Tsunami out at the Caye and Cayo South will be at Roaring Creek against San Felipe Barcelona.
In other football news, action in the Yabra Community Tournament saw Vianney ran over Poor and Famous 4-1, while Jah Love and Brown Bombers settled for a 2-2 draw. In under fifteen play Fabers Road bombed Poor and Famous 5-1.
In basketball news, Wesley Junior College and St. John’s College Junior College dominated the ATLIB Northern Regionals at the SJC Gym on Saturday. Wesley Junior College rolled past Corozal Jr. College 44-42 to emerge the male champions while SJCJC finished second in this class. In female play SJCJC jolted WJC 24-13 to take that title forcing Wesley into second. All four teams will now compete in the national tournament on a date to be announced later.
Turning to the volleyball scene, six teams competed for the National Male Primary School title at the City Center Friday. St. Alphonsus needed three sets to wrestle the title from United Evergreen 25-16, 17-25, 15-13 while on the female side Christian Academy defeated Richard Quinn RC in two; 25-23, 25-23 to take that title. Angelina Budna of Toledo emerged the female MVP of this national tournament. Delphino Augustine of Stann Creek took the male MVP title and we say good show.
In cycling news, we’re at the border at Santa Elena Corozal where series two of the Weekend Warriors is about to blast off for the final stage of this cat four and five riders. It’s a six stage race and going in Santi Castillo trails Phillip Burns 41-40 in points total going into this sixth stage. And they’re off! The pressure of being behind forces Santino to get up off his bike to grab the first premie at Corozal Town which translated into three points and he becomes the man to beat. These three riders; Phillipin Mencias, Duan Ford, and Edwin Martinez take over the pace outside San Jose and look to run all the way. Of course, the main pack tries to hang on even though it becomes more and more difficult with each passing mile. Still at the finish line, just inside Sugar City OW, the big three are still in control. Duan Ford gets up for W and Phillipin Mencias has to settle for second, Edwin Martinez rolls in for third. Here is Amir Gonzalez claiming fourth place in uncontested fashion and in the field sprint for fifth place George Lovell is the man while Santi Castillo pulls up ninth. Folks, its enough to give him the Weekend Warriors six stage title with a total of forty-seven points and we say congratulations. Santino edged out Phillip Burns by three points as he totaled forty-four for second. Andrew Ordonez amassed thirty-nine for third place, Duan Ford thirty-eight for fourth, while Colonel George Lovell rounds out the top five with thirty-four points.
Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
