Sunken culvert creates a dip on thoroughfare

Traffic was restricted to one lane at mile seven on the Western Highway this afternoon after one of the recently replaced culverts in that area had to undergo urgent repairs. It appears that when that culvert was installed, the material beneath it was not properly compressed. So when the rains came and the soil got wet, it could not support the culvert, which then sank and created a dip on the thoroughfare. What that means is that Ministry of Works’ employees had to rip out that portion of the road to get to the problem. This now raises concerns about the how the other culverts that were replaced on that stretch of road will fare off in the rainy season. News Five contacted the Minister of Works Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez, CEO Cadet Henderson and Chief Engineer Lennox Bradley but they were not updated on the situation. The Ministry of Works crew will work on the repairs until they can re-open the road to traffic.
