Cayo women train in agricultural production
Agriculture has been the backbone of the Belizean economy for decades … and now the San Antonio Women’s Group in the Cayo District is looking to get in on the action. This week, ten of its members took part in a two-day workshop organized by the Department of Agriculture. District Agricultural Coordinator, Oscar Salazar told us more.
Oscar Salazar, District Agricultural Coordinator
“This two day training will serve the group with as much information as we can give them on what is happening in agriculture at the national level, not only in the rural community here but at a national level. And that will assist them in order to make a proper decision as to where they want to go. The ministry will also support them with developing proposals in order fro them to develop their enterprise as well. They are presently benefiting from BRDP, which they have received funds. They have started working already from last year in arts and craft. These ladies are very excited and interested in going into agriculture as well, most of them come from agricultural families. The first step is how we can do it, thus the training for these two days.”
Misty Matea Mesh, Chair, San Antonio Women’s Group
“I hope that after this workshop we can make our decisions and make another job that can keep us very busy and help our community also because if we work with broilers we will see if we can cover the market here in San Antonio.”
The training included management and production of poultry and organic vegetables.
