Telemedia, “Sedi” Elrington team up to upgrade preschool
As Pickstock representative, Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington teamed up with Telemedia to repair and renovate the Lloyd Coffin Preschool on Mahogany Street. On Saturday, staff members of the Telemedia and the Pickstock community including the Pickstock Development Committee convened at the school to begin the work. The two groups worked hand in hand with the painting, planting and uplifting of the school which will be enjoyed by the community’s youngsters.
Evan Vernon, Community Organizer and Developer
“Our purpose is to engage the community to come together in community meetings to form smaller groups. We want to take ownership of some of the issues relevant to community development; whether the issue is garbage disposal, whether the issue is streets and sanitation, whether the issue is housing, whatever the issues are crime, whatever.”
Ma Joan, Member Pickstock Development Committee
“We decided that we would find this place here and when we found it we would try to make it into an area where children, young people and of course some adults can come too. But you know the young people, we’re focusing on a lot; where they come and do their homework, they learn to play instruments, they learn and we want to have a band from here. Not immediately, but over a period of time, we’ll have a band. And the band will be able to play and represent the area. And so because of this I am happy to volunteer and come here to be a part of everything that is happening.”
Linette Canto, Public Relations Executive, Telemedia
“We get involved in projects that will really help to build and uplift the society and we felt that this project fit and our criteria and that is why we decided to go ahead with it and that is why we are here today. Our investment will total approximately a hundred and fifty thousand dollars by the time this project is completed and we plan to leave this community with a very beautiful building that I’m sure will be enjoyed by those in the area and those who are visiting the area.”
Kenton Lewis Jr., Former Student of Lloyd Coffin Preschool
“And me love how they paint the building.”
The project was devised by Elrington to create a multipurpose centre for youths and adults providing internet, day care and child services. Telemedia staff will continue to work next Saturday.
