Father of two gets 6 years for sex crime
In the Supreme Court, a married man and father of two, who was found guilty of Carnal Knowledge last week, will spend six years behind bars for the crime. Forty-one year old Leroy Stevens received the sentence today in the Court of Justice Adolph Lucas. Before passing the sentence Justice Lucas heard a plea of mitigation from Stevens and his daughter, nineteen year old student Laureen Stevens, who told the court that her father is a family man and a nice person who has no previous convictions and asked for leniency on his behalf. When the accused took the stand, he said that as far as he is concerned, the judgment against him was wrong and he did not want his family to go through the ordeal again. He also asked the court to be lenient.
The penalty for carnal knowledge is between five and ten years, when the victims are between the ages of fourteen and sixteen. The charge for unlawful carnal knowledge applies to persons under fourteen years of age and the conviction of that offense is twelve years and can extend to life imprisonment. Crown Counsel Nadine Palacio represented the prosecution while Stevens was not represented.
The incident took place on December fourteenth, 2006 at a house in Hattieville where after having sex with the minor, Stevens gave her one dollar and fifty cents.
