David Gabourel murdered on Kelly Street
Criminal elements were on a rampage over the weekend wreaking havoc in the City and around the country. There was one murder, a grenade explosion, robberies and plenty more crime. We start first with a murder in the wee hours of Saturday morning in Belize City. Jose Sanchez has a report.

Thirty-six year old David Gabourel, a quiet and hardworking man was murdered after three-thirty a.m. Saturday morning in his yard at sixty-three Kelly Street a few feet away from Cinderella Plaza. A neighbour found his body.

“When I open di door I saw di young man body down deh and ih look motionless and I call di police.”

“You called his name first right? You called out to him?”

“No, I neva call because I si ah down deh motionless and I si ants di try penetrate ih body so I had wah feeling more or less dat mussy murder. So I call di police and dehn came right away to deal with it.”
Gabourel had five stab wounds, one to the back of his neck, two to the chest and two to his upper back. The pool of blood in the yard speaks of a gruesome death. His sister, Helena, couldn’t believe that anyone would want to hurt him.

“My lee cousin come and call me dis morning after six, after seven come tell me how my bredda get shot. So I just jump out of my bed, hurry haul on clothes and come out yah come see. When I get out yah dehn seh yes, yoh bredda get shot. I seh but how, weh happen you know. He dah somebody weh noh around, he noh talk. If you ask he fi anything, once he has it he tries to help in anyway he could.”
Gabourel was a designer and finisher at Coye’s Funeral Parlour on Freetown Road for twenty-five years. David Coye, his former boss, remembers Gabourel to be a good man.

“The man was a kind guy, very quiet, hard working, honest guy. I noh know who would have envy to that stage noh, to really give ah that cruel death.”

“Do you know him to have any enemies?”
David Coye
“Not really, no. But I think well, this dah di first time ih noh really share that information with me. But I think he had one or two words with other friend no. He would mention somebody mi di try threaten ah or things like that.”

“Well ih tell ih uncle and my auntie that somebody want kill ah. And my auntie tell ah noh worry about that. And beside that, I don’t know much more.”
“I just see the crowd round when I reach. Di house inna wah mess. I come inside and I guess, I don’t know if dehn gone inna the house or what. But dehn find ah done dead and dehn tek certain things out ah di house like the DVD, the CD player, ih money, ih phone and dehn tek di car.”

“They said stuff was missing from his home. Do you think it was a home robbery or something personal?”
David Coye
“ No, I think it was something personal because if you know him you can take away whatever ih have easy; dah wah small guy. Everybody would ah call ah lee bwai. Ih thirty-six years old, dah wah man but ih have di heart ah wah child because ih kind. Di wah miss ah because when school ova di kids dehn run in yah ask fi quarter and so and ih freely give mein.”
According to Coye, Gabourel was the best in his field. Gabourel worked on the coffins for Phillip Goldson and Andy Palacio. Coye says that the little man of about five feet, four will also receive a coffin fit for a great Belizean which has been shaped by his own hands and the co-workers who immensely miss his large presence.
