World Post Day celebrated at the Post Office

Story PictureEvery year October ninth is recognized as World Post Day. For the second consecutive year, Belize’s Postal Service is celebrating the day with several activities including an open day with displays featuring the services provided by the postal service and an exhibition on stamps. The theme for this year’s World Post Day is “A postal service committed to green growth”. And to do just that, several employees have been going to schools throughout the city planting mahogany trees to green up the world. Mail Supervisor for the Post Office, James Gabourel, says that there were several events leading up to the ninth.

“We’re targeting majority of the schools within Belize City. We have visited Wesley College so far, Gwen Lizaragga, we’re about to go to St. Martin De Porres. We have several other schools that we’ll be visiting.”

“How much total?”

“We have fifty plants to distribute. The plants were donated to us from the Forestry Department. Today being world post day, we are having a customer appreciation day and an open day and we would like to encourage everyone to attend the event. Earlier this week, we had several other activities. The week actually got started on Sunday with a day of prayer at St. John’s Cathedral and that was followed by a training session for junior officers; we had a sporting event in the form of a bicycle race for staff. This evening we’ll be doing several sporting event on the compound of the general post office. We’ll be distributing awards, trophies, and we’ll do a social for staff. What we are displaying is the process that we go through when you enter the post office to mail a letter. Also you will see that we have the philatelic branch of the post office out there. The philatelic section is the section responsible for stamp collecting. Once you are a stamp collector, you will deal with the philatelic bureau where you will see a very large collection of different issues of stamp that Belize has produced.”
