Student shows talent in photography

Story PictureBelize is a treasure trove for professional and amateur photographers alike. What escapes our observation is focused zoomed upon with the lens of an artistic eye and snapped by visual visionaries. One such person is Richard Holder, who experienced added flair to his recent exhibition, Project Poverty. And while Holder is established in his field, there is a new kid on the block who appears to be heading that way. Seventeen year old Amrah Canul, a Belize City youth who graduated from high school a few months ago, started experimenting with picture-taking earlier this year. We invited this self-taught youth to our studios to find out more about his craft and his pictures.

Amrah Canul, photographer
“Well it all started with Photoshop, just doing graphics and what not and then I decided to experiment with some pictures and realised they’re like one in the same and the go good together. So after that with my camera I began experimenting with the photos and I realised they turned out really nice. It’s just a matter of having the camera all the time because it’s just luck that you come across something interesting to photograph. The grasshopper photo that I have and insects on flowers, those are good macro shots.”

“People wanted me to take pictures of them and I was willing to volunteer my time and skills so we just picked locations and they just take their pose and I photograph them. That’s how that came about. They did their own poses and stuff. I had some friends come along to help pose them because I just find the good angles and take their photos. I have the beautiful backdrop of Belize to do sceneries and since I travel a lot and take my camera with me, I just come across beautiful scenery to photograph.”

“There’s one from Half-Moon Caye with a sunset. Most of my breathless pictures come out as luck. There’s one with a Rasta man by the fish market. I was just driving by and I decided to snap a shot and then appeared in the picture and I realised that it had a good composition and so I kept it and I fixed it up and that’s how it came about. There’s the Old Belize Set the Black and white ones with the girl and the boy. Those had some pretty good shots. I’m open for jobs anytime.”
