Cancer Society opens refurbished conference room
“We need you today, you might need us tomorrow” is the motto of the Belize Cancer Society and one family that has taken that phrase to heart is the Skeens. Since the inauguration of the society over a decade ago, the family has donated approximately thirty-one thousand dollars to the organization. Their latest contribution assisted in renovating the conference room at the B.C.S. headquarters on Mercy Lane. At the opening of the new office space this morning, the Society took time out to show appreciation to the family for their support through the years. News Five spoke with Marilyn Jones Skeen, who told us of her family’s motivation.
Marilyn Jones Skeen, Donor
“We are involved with this society for many reasons; first one being that we had one sister in 1992 who was diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2002 she passed away. Then this year, we had another sister that was diagnosed with breast cancer also so we decided to get more active in this society. We have been contributing to the establish from 1996, but never have we really worked so hard in such a short time to fundraise so much money and we thought that renovating this boardroom would be of great assistance to the society itself.”
Laura Longsworth, Vice-President, Belize Cancer Society
“The Skeen family honoured the Belize Cancer Society by establishing a boardroom that can be used, not only for counseling for patients which will be the key purpose, but also as an income generating project where small meetings and training can take place here. We envision that we will be able to offer small group training on cancer prevention and control. We will be able to teach counseling and also invite our wonderful cancer survivors to sessions in that board room.”
B.C.S. Vice President, Laura Longsworth, says that the facility is available to the public for rental. For more information; contact the offices at 223-0922. The Belize Cancer Society supports cancer patients, especially those who may not have the finances for needed therapies and surgeries.
