NEMO minister reviews flood damages
The evacuation in Douglas is only one of the items on NEMO’s agenda. With the recent floods affecting four districts, the emergency organization will have its work cut out for quite some time. Today NEMO Minster Melvin Hulse told News Five that disaster response teams are out in full force, although their focus has shifted in some areas.
Melvin Hulse, Minister of NEMO
“We have a full team in Cayo District. We have teams in Belize District, in the Orange Walk District, Corozal District. So in one are we still have the food team focussing in the flooded area of Orange Walk and what not where we’re making sure that the basics are still being maintained, that the boats are out there, we’re still moving people, we’re monitoring the height of the flood. The waters are not going up apparently and making sure what has been put in place has not broken down. So they’re taking care of the water, the clothing, the food supply, the provision of transport and those areas that are beginning to be accessible, we have another huge team out there going from village to village, checking every single house, itemising everything in the house, looking at it, taking photographs of it. Every single house that had gone under water a photograph will be taken of it, the name of the family in it, the amount of people in it, what items they have lost. So we’re doing that from home to home.”
That assessment is also being done for the agriculture industry. Hulse also says as the clean up progresses, it is high time for the government and residents to start thinking about mitigation should another flooding occur.
