Mexican National drowns after jumping off international bridge
In the north, a Mexican national died on Sunday after jumping off the international bridge that connects Belize to Mexico. Corozal Police do not have much information on the deceased, Miguel Angel Galindo, but they have confirmed he was crossing the bridge along with his brother Rene Veliz Galindo at around four p.m. In his inebriated state, Miguel jumped into the water and was overpowered by the swift currents. Superintendent Miguel Guzman, the Officer commanding Corozal Police spoke to News Five via phone with the information they have gathered and told us how the rescue efforts brought Miguel into Belize.

“There were two persons who were walking across the bridge, apparently under the influence of alcohol when one of the male Hispanic persons jumped into the river from the bridge on the Mexican side. Other people who were on the bridge saw that he was in distress—about three other people—so they jumped to assist him. But because of the strong current that was taking them down river it was easier for them to bring the person out through the Belize side just going along with the current. That was what actually happened. When police arrived there they saw the motionless body of the male Hispanic person, who was identified to be Miguel Angel Galindo—other particulars unknown—who is a Mexican national. An interview with his brother Rene Veliz Galindo of Puebla, Mexico, he gave the police certain information. In an effort to assist the person who was motionless, he was transported to the Corozal Town Hospital whereby upon arrival the medical officer on duty pronounced him dead. The Mexican authorities were contacted and similarly the family came to the police station requesting if they can get the body. Working through our Mexican counterparts the body was later handed over to the Mexican authorities for continuation of investigations. This incident was also confirmed by a Mexican immigration officer who was on duty at the time who saw the entire incident.”
While Miguel’s body was recovered in Belize, all persons involved in the incident were Mexican nationals.
