Majority of viewers don’t think hurricane shelters are up to par
The first test for this active hurricane season was last weekend when the then Tropical Storm Alex breezed through Belize. In anticipation of rising water levels, shelters were opened in vulnerable areas. So on Tuesday we asked: Do you think that hurricane shelters are adequate to accommodate needy families? Eighty-two percent of our viewers are not pleased with the state of most of the nation’s hurricane shelters. A viewer texted in a concern, saying “In Bullet Tree Falls our hurricane shelters are old and rotten, water almost entered last year.” Another viewer expressed concern about the sustainability of the shelters saying “Most hurricane shelters in Belize are actually death traps during medium strength storms.” But while the majority believes that the state shelters are not up to par, eighteen percent think that our shelters are satisfactory.
