Man beats murder rap; gets 15 years for manslaughter

Story PictureAnd in the Supreme Court, a man who was last Friday found guilty of the lesser charge of Manslaughter, beating the charge of murder, heard his sentence today in the Court of Justice Adolph Lucas. Thirty-two year old John Williams received a sentence of fifteen years behind bars. Williams was convicted for the killing of forty-nine year old Canuto Maurice Tillett by hitting him on the head with a stick on the night of April fifth, 2007 at Tillett’s home on Tibruce Street. Before he passed sentenced, Justice Lord heard a plea of mitigation from Williams’ attorney, Simeon Sampson. Sampson asked Justice Lucas to take into consideration the fact that Williams has no previous conviction and that it was not a case of pre-meditation. He also asked Justice Lucas to consider the fact that a firearm was not used and furthermore that Williams was accused of stealing by the deceased, who was drunk at the time of the crime. Senior Crown Counsel Cecil Ramirez prosecuted the trial.
