Safiyyah’s weekly search for entertainment and the best fried chicken

It’s another busy summer weekend as the Old Capital once again comes to life with activities for the entire family.  Entertainment host Safiyyah has a rundown of everything that’s happening from the film festival to the first fried chicken champ.

Hey I’m Safiyyah and this is what’s happening Belize.

Tonight marks the opening night of the 5th edition of Film Festival. The opening ceremonies will be held at 7pm at the Bliss center. This ceremony will feature a celebrity red carpet as well as a cocktail reception and the viewing the movie Silent Army. The organizers of the Festival are expecting such guest as International actor Anthony Anderson, who has starred in films such as Romeo Must Die, Hustle and Flow and most recently Back Up Plan.  The film festival will run from the 16th thru to the 24th.

The place to be after the film festival opening is another special edition of French Kiss. They are calling this one a Cancer Celebrity Affair; a night with the stars. This Party will be held in celebration of the birthday of DJ Jago of Tagg International as well as Actor Darryl Mitchell, from the movie House Party 1 and 2. Music will be provided by Belizean Movements and Tagg International. There will be drink specials all night and all ladies enter free before 11.

Also tonight will kick off Stress free Summer Nights inside club Next. This will be happening this and every Friday night. Ladies can enter free before midnight. Music will be provided by 501 Federation Sounds and DJ motion.

In the evening on Saturday you can go check out the Travellers Cocktail Challenge happening at the Barrel Bar. This competition will begin at 4pm and will feature 9 bartenders competing for the top spot. There will be free sampling for the audience so make sure you go check it out.

Also Saturday evening the Mahogany Masqueraders will be having a mini Fair and Teen Dance. They are having this fundraiser in an effort to help raise money for their carnival costumes. There will be music, food and dancing competitions. This will all be going down at 8400 McKay Boulevard. The fun will begin at 4pm.

On a Saturday night you can head over to the Tropicana Lounge in the Fort Street Shopping Plaza where they will be having the Old School Fever Dance. This party will feature music by Lindy D, Federation 501 Sound, Mista Frisco and others.

In Sandhill on Saturday night you can check out the Bash happening inside Edge Wata. Music will be provided by Baby Love Movements, DJ Buddy, and DJ Mark. There will even be performances by Concigo, Positive Vibes, and Continental Cat. There will be dance competitions and lots of other fun things going on. There will be drink giveaways before midnight.

On Sunday there will be a complimentary trip to San Pedro by Grand Belizean Estates. This trip is being designed around people that might be interested in buying a piece of paradise. The boat ride is completely free as well as the food and drinks that will be served there. The boat will depart at 9:30am. For more information call 223-0223 or 629-7987.

Now it’s the time you’ve all be waiting for, food challenge time. Fry chicken may not be the healthiest meal you can have but it sure is delicious. It’s a guilty pleasure for many, me included. This week we put to the test four of Belize city’s top Fry chicken spot; Kick Down Fence, Pratt’s, Chon Saan and Fibbers. We were originally included Li Chee but they chose not to participate, but the competition went out. Check out what happened when our 3 judges put the chicken to the test…

Now it’s time to announce the winner. The winner was chicken number one Kick down fence chicken with Pratt’s coming in 2nd. Remember guys it’s all in good fun. Maybe you agree with our judges or Maybe not. That’s ok.  Make sure you stay tuned for a lot more fun food competitions!
