James Adderley wraps up the week in sports
Good Evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this serving of Sports Monday.
International football took centre stage inside the Marshalleck Stadium at Benque Fiesta yesterday as the Belize Defence Force the 2010 champion of the Belize Premier football league and owner of the Caribbean Motors Cup played host to the red hot Platense , a legitimated contender inside the Honduran Professional First Division Football League in an international friendly.
We’re just about five minutes in, when this corner kick is kept alive to Jorge Cardon , who thinks he has and early goal until Vallan Symms digs it out in time for the B.D.F . A couple minutes later Belizean international, Elroy Kuylen, on this Platense team, triggers this spot kick that scares Woodrow West into a flying attempt to save a ball that curls outside the target.
The visitors continue to raid with this bomb from outside that gives West something to do and he does. The B.D.F.’s first real attempt at a goal comes off this set piece by Vallan Symms that sees Victor Cadillo get some work. now, watch people, Belizean international , Harrison “Kafu” Roches beat Woodrow for what looks like a sure goal until Tyrone Pandy heads it out of the danger at the half we’ve got a scoreless ballgame.
We’re midway through second half when, Harrison “Kaffu” Roches hooks up with Jorge Cardon, who beats West in the far corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Off this corner kick Belize gets a chance to equalize but the final touch would remain elusive.
The Belize Defence Force again looks to set the piece to generate offence-this header from Orlando Jimenez bounces off the crossbar-Platense of Honduras goes on to post the 1-0 big W. Nevertheless it was a good show for the Belize Defence Force.
Turning to the Belize Bank super league, the final regular season schedule brought San Felipe Barcelona to the MCC grounds in need of a win against City Boys United to make the four team playoffs in 2010. So they get off real fast when, Wicab finds Oscar Ascevedo with this centre and the header gives the visitors a 1-0 lead at the thirteenth minute of play, Three minutes later this centre towards the goal from Tyrone Linarez is misjudged by Jose Ascevedo and we’ve got a 1-1 tie sixteen minutes in.
It seems San Felipe is not focused on helping itself today, because at the seventeenth minute, this defence error by Gabriel Perez gifts the ball to Jareth Dawson who gives the City team a 2-1 lead on a nice individual effort. Some five minutes later Harvey Cruz beats two defences and the keeper, Charlie Slusher to tie the ballgame at a two a piece at the twenty-third minute of play.
San Felipe Barcelona pulls ahead at the thirtieth minute off this corner that’s kept alive to Christopher Hendricks, who makes it a 3-2 score.
A minute out of intermission, a defensive error by Perez and goalkeeper Ascevedo give Raymond Gentle a chance to score and he makes it a 3-3 tie.
City Boys pull ahead when Dalton Cayetano mounts this individual effort that culminates with the ball in the back of the net for the 4-3 score. But here comes San Felipe again, Oscar Ascevedo finds Victor Morales and his header crashes into the net for the 4-4 regulation tie that takes Barcelona team out of the playoffs picture in the super league.
In other actions over the weekend, Santa Elena Synergy beat Placencia Assassin 2-1, while the match between Nizhee Corozal and Belize United FC has been rescheduled for tomorrow or Wednesday. This match will determine if it is Santa Elena or Nizhee that makes it to the four team playoffs. Already in are Placencia Assassin, Hattieville FC and City Boys United in that order.
Turning to Cricket news the pitch at Double Head Cabbage was ruled unfit to finish game two of the three game championship series between Surprise of Lemonal and Excellence of Double Head Cabbage in the Harrison Parks Cricket Competition so we join Elston Wade for this information.
Elston Wade
“Unfortunately the game had to be postponed due to the weather. Sixteen overs was bowled in the first innings. Excellence was at bat and their two opening bats men scored forty-seven runs when the shower came down. As a result the umpire after the shower evaluated the grounds and decided that it was too wet to continue play. The rule of cricket is that the game will continue from where it was stopped and therefore next week Saturday here in Double Head Cabbage the second match will continue and it will continue with Excellence at bat; their third and fourth batsman will be going into bat “
Turning to the Interoffice Basketball News we head to the Civic Center for Fiday with the big match between First Caribbean/ Quan Trading and Belize Water and Sewage Limited and this was a strange one indeed people. First Caribbean goes on to a 6-0 run before Andrew Gordon banks the pill home for the first BWSL points in this outing. Bryan Grant then gets the second bucket for the Water people with this three point touch-and can you believe it- at the end of the first quarter the score is 6-5 in favour of First Caribbean.
In the second, Lawrence Young hits one of the two from the charity stripe for the only point by BWSL this quarter and six in the half, which must be some kind of Guinness World Book Record.
In the third, Jaheed Smith finds Jacob “Snake” Leslie, who sinks the three he would lead all scorers with twenty-one points. Folk this is one was over from the start as First Caribbean Bank/Quan Trading goes out to post the 68-39 big W. In the other match ups Friday night, Tuff E-Nuff edged Atlantic Bank 67-64 and Guardian Housing beat Belize Telemedia 71-67.
Checking other basketball news , the Belize District Basketball Association kicks off the 2010 playoffs at the Civic Centre Friday night with a friendly between the U-15 National Basketball Team, set to travel shortly, and Truckers opens the night and the big boys come out as Belize Bank Bulldogs take on UB Jaguars.
On Sunday Orange Walk Running rebels will face Truckers. Belize Bank Bulldogs Jr. goes up against Hold on Smart and in the senior nightcap San Pedro Tiger Sharks go to work against Belmopan Bandits.
