UB lends a helping hand to flood victims
Residents in the Cayo and Belize districts affected by the flooding have help on the way. There are reports that many communities are in need of basic provisions including food and water. With this in mind, a group of students from the University of Belize is working in collaboration with NEMO and Red Cross to provide assistance. The U.B. campuses in Belmopan and Cayo are distributing urgent supplies to the affected villages in those areas and there are also plans to assist flood victims in the Belize District. Members of the student government dropped by our studios today and told us what influenced their initiative. President, Moses Sulph explains.
Moses Sulph, President, U.B. Student Gov’t., Belize City
“We realize that there a lot of people in need of assistance who are affected severely by the flood that’s going on. Even some of our students are affected and not only our students, but the general population who are in that location that is affected by the flood. We are out here to try and see how we can call on our students from the University of Belize and our alumni because we have many alumni out there working who are in good working positions who can contribute towards the assisting community. We’re calling on them to kindly donate some kind of item; food items, canned items, to the victims of the flood. We really need the community on a whole, even the business community to try and see how they can assist because there are a lot of people who are in need and I really want to see how we can help them. So all the U.B. students, tax payers have been helping us and we’re calling on you to come and give back in some way.”
Justin Espat, Vice-President, U.B. Student Gov’t., Belize City
“We have received some very healthy donations from Sikaffy, Twins on St. Thomas Street, Save-U, also we are expecting to get donations by the end of today from various Indian shops and also the Chinese community has given very generously as well.”
