Weekend rains get in the way of sporting activities
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re most welcome to this delivery of Sports Monday.
The recent deluge of rain has been unforgiving to the nation and indeed most out-door sports in the country had to side-step that watery grip this weekend with wholesale re-scheduling. Falling victim were week two of the B.P.F.L. Regents Cup playoffs, week eight of the Super League of soccer and the over thirty-five basketball competition scheduled to blast off at Big Bird’s Isle on Saturday night had to go the route of postponement. We must remind you though that all three competitions are keeping an eye on the weather before making a new announcement so stay tuned like we said. Blame it on the rain people.
However, even the soaking conditions of the environment could not prevent week three of the Weekend Warriors six stage road race from running at full speed for thirty miles on the Orange Walk bypass and here at the start yesterday are the thirty-two riders still in the hunt at the halfway mark of this journey. For the first two laps the pelathon remains intact as neither Santino Castillo nor Evander Bennett could shake the crowd. It’s Ashton Bowman of Team Western Spirit and Dawn Ford who grab command of the race in the final lap. And as they straighten up to head back to the finish line, this pack of hungry wolves do make chase. For Santino the final lap brings disaster with a wheel puncture at the most inopportune time from which he would not recover. At the curve to the tape Ashton Bowman dismissed his companion Dawn Ford with a power on the inside as he rolls in to take top honours. Evander Bennett prevails in the four man sprint for third place so Phillip Burn takes fourth, Derek Smith fifth and Andrew Ordonez rounds out the top six.
Thus, after three stages of the Weekend Warriors Tours, Evander Bennett of Team LA/Princes lead with twenty-four points, Santino Castillo who finished out of the top ten in stage three falls to second place with twenty-three points, Andrew Ordonez is in third with twenty-two points, Phillip Burns has twenty-one while Carlo Marin rounds out the top five with twenty points. In the meantime, stage four is set for twenty-sixth October, stage five comes up on November ninth while the weekend Warriors Race for cat four and five riders concludes on November twenty-third. Again, stay tuned.
In basketball news, the over thirty-five competition featuring nine teams will now kick off this Saturday, October twenty-fifth at Big Bird’s Isle and we just want to remind you that Team Albert returns as defending champions.
Finally folks, we say kudos to Ezekiel Solomon who took first place in the masters class of the Staten Island half mile marathon in the U.S. last Sunday, October twelfth and finished eighty-fourth overall from a field of over ten thousand runners. Solomon also won the masters class in this race in 2005. We say Good show.
Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
