Inmates get one more year for one day of escape
And three inmates who broke out of prison on September twenty-seventh faced a charge of Escape in Magistrate Kathleen Lewis’ court today. Twenty-nine year old Terry Bainton, twenty-two year old Jose Melgar and twenty-nine year old Jose Lewis were recaptured on September twenty-eighth on the Western Highway. So what came out of their one day of freedom? After pleading guilty, all three men were sentenced to one year in prison, but Magistrate Lewis showed mercy and stipulated that it run concurrently with any current sentences. Lewis heard from the inmates that they had escaped because they worked hard to be eligible for parole which was denied without reason and that they grew frustrated with the system. Bainton was convicted of a series of burglaries and had been behind bars since the year 2000. In 2002, Cocom was found guilty of maim and has served seven of his eleven years sentence. Meanwhile, Melgar had been incarcerated since 2005 when he was only seventeen years old. Magistrate Lewis explained to them before they left court, that by escaping they only hurt their chances of parole even more.
