G.O.B. puts the brakes on Marion Jones sporting complex
The Marion Jones Sporting Complex has been a dream for youths and sports enthusiasts who have long waited for the government to develop the stadium into a professional sporting center. Before the February general elections there was activity on the grounds of the stadium on Princess Margaret Drive and it appeared that the complex would have become a reality. But all that was halted and the contract was cancelled. The matter is reportedly still tied up in courts. Back then the sports center was estimated to cost seventeen million dollars. But a lot has occurred and now the government is announcing it has decided to defer the construction of the complex. According to a government release today, the cost of steel and other construction materials have skyrocketed and the new appraisal for the project is twenty-six million dollars, an additional fourteen million that the government says it cannot afford. G.O.B. is now planning to use the twelve million dollars raised for the project, to repair and upgrade existing sporting facilities across the country. But first they will need to gain approval from Taiwan which loaned the country ten million dollars for the project and from Venezuela that gave a grant of two million dollars. It is not known if and when government is proposing to raise the additional fourteen million dollars.
