Cynthia Pitts is new Ombudswoman
And while the APAMO appointment is in trouble, the appointment of Cynthia Pitts as ombudswoman was confirmed today. Pitts, an attorney by profession, is attached to the law firm of Pitts and Elrington.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“Cabinet has agreed to recommend to the National Assembly, the appointment of Ms. Cynthia Pitts as the Ombudswoman or Ombudsperson. I believe you are familiar with Ms. Cynthia Pitts, a lawyer of antiquity—maybe that’s not fair to her. A well established lawyer and somebody who has been very active with respect to human rights and somebody who for a long time represented the union with respect to the Public Services Commission. So I believe that there will be no questioning as to her qualifications for the job, as to her objectivity, as to her lack of any kind of political taint.”
As for a new Solicitor General, Barrow says efforts by the Attorney General to secure attorney Rowan Phillips of Grenada fell through when he was appointed SolGen in his own country. The A.G. is, however, looking at other possible candidates and it is hoped that the post will be filled shortly. The country has been without a Solicitor General since the end of June when Tanya Herwanger resigned.
