Delphina Terry needs help, rains are flooding her home

Story PictureMany families in the southside of Belize City live in dire conditions and it doesn’t take a hurricane to flood their homes. Residents of Antelope Street extension suffer whenever it rains, they live in a swampy area, their lots are not filled and the area has grown haphazardly. This evening, News Five spoke to Delphina Terry, a resident who says this rainy season her small house was so flooded that she has had to move. But her three grand children and their parents have not been as fortunate and could not afford to move or repair the small structure. The water from the drains seep into their home which is on ground level and they need help. Delphina is making an appeal to anyone who is willing for assistance.

“I mi have to move because my flooring drop een. Right now I di rent wah lee apartment for fifty dollars a week. Sometimes I can’t even make it. She, Vanessa, Tyrone and di next lee grandson gone dah park. He name Theodore Swaso like ih pah.”

Jose Sanchez
“How does the family survive?”

Delphina Terry
“Mi daddy do security and sometimes thing really dread and he have to go hustle. I do lee scraping of fish da market; sometimes I do food you know and like dat and so. Well, when ih rain di water come up and get inna di house, flood the house. Sometimes ih deh up to dehn waist to here.”

Jose Sanchez
“How do you sleep? What happens to your furniture? Your things.”

Delphina Terry
“Well we have to dash them out, we have to put dehn out because dehn get wet up.”

Jose Sanchez
“Are you worried about the health of these children?”

Delphina Terry
“Because these are my grand babies. At least for them—I want dehn help me at least them.”

Jose Sanchez
“So right now you’re facing hard times. Who are you asking for help?”

Delphina Terry
“Well, I di ask di minister, anybody; any one ah di ministers dehn if dehn could help fix di house fi di babies sake.”

Jose Sanchez
“And the public?”

Delphina Terry
“At least, di public too, yes.”

Jose Sanchez
“So you said you want to get the house raised, maybe you want some plywood. What exactly do you need?”

Delphina Terry
“Probably—ih leak too. Ih leak because when yoh deh inna yoh bed, water wet yoh. Di beaver board, we use beaver board but we noh got di money fi buy di ply board and so we use beaver board and di ply board burst off.”

Jose Sanchez
“So you’re looking for a good Samaritan to give some help?”

Delphina Terry
“Yes sir, for the sake of my three grand babies.”
