Storm brewing in sugar industry
And from the embattled transport industry to the sugar industry where a storm is brewing over millions of dollars allegedly unaccounted for. Reports from the north say that fireworks are expected this weekend when the Orange Walk Division of the Cane Farmers Association holds its annual general meeting. At stake is a whopping seven point two million dollars that were granted to the Association back in February when the local sugar got the Fairtrade Certification which enabled sugar sales to the European market to fetch up to one hundred and twenty dollars per ton. The monies were intended to be used to improve efficiency and to assist sugar communities. News Five understands, however, that the procedures were not followed in its disbursement and that there is no accountability of how the monies have been spent.
