… But Moya says council approved the monies
Not one to shy away, Mayor Moya told News Five she stands by her earlier statements. Moya said that the three thousand dollars were approved in a resolution passed by the Council shortly after she took office in 2006. When she appeared on News Five two evenings ago, Moya vehemently denied any wrongdoing. And today she said that because she knows that the majority of Councillors are against her, they are now playing politics with the issue. Here’s what she said two days ago.
Marion Ali
“The allegation is that it is not really comparing yourself with the previous mayor, it’s saying that you are paying yourself monies that the current council did not authorize or know about. Is that so?”
Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“No, I am showing you exactly-and the minutes. The law says that—let me tell you what the law says when it comes to these things. It says the council may—and this is Belize City Council chapter eighty-five section twelve—the Council may, by resolution, fix an allowance to be paid to members for monies constituting the Belize City fund. The council may by resolution fix. Resolutions are made at the monthly Council meetings. That’s where resolutions are made. I have copies of all the council meetings; every single one of them and in no way—see the resolutions here—none of them, none of them have anything and you know why they won’t have it? Because were just simply going with what the previous council was making; we had already agreed that.”
