Mexican press says drug submarines spotted in Belize

There are press reports that a submarine believed to be transporting drugs has been spotted in the waters of Mahahual, a coastal town located in the proximity of Chetumal that has become one of the fastest growing tourist destinations north of the border. The sighting of the submarine caused quite a stir because Mexican authorities deployed the army, federal, and maritime forces to the area over the past weekend. Security forces quoted in the Mexican press say that sightings of such vessels have been reported in Belize and are used by Central American organizations involved in drug trafficking. The incident was reported by residents of the tourism village last Saturday, but the exercise by the Mexican security forces turned up empty handed. According to a report in the Periodistas Quintano Roo, this is not the first time that such subs have been spotted and that it is known that in the waters of San Pedro Ambergris Caye, similar sightings have been made.
