Belize-Mexico tennis tournament begins Friday

Story PictureThe Sixth International Belize-Mexico Friendship Tournament is scheduled for this weekend. The Belize Tennis Association has chosen its top tennis players that are to compete against visiting players from Mexico and the USA. Organizers say that over twenty Belizean players, both female and male, will be going against the visitors in three different categories—the Male Open Singles, Ladies’ Open Singles and Master Doubles.

Billy Musa Jr., 2nd Vice President, Belize Tennis Association
“It was an open tournament but the draw was done yesterday so entries were closed yesterday. It has been advertised and promoted for about a month now. Usually, for this type of tournament you will probably have players that are rated more or less at a four point O level. So basically, it’s for players that really know how to play and they’ve grasp the game already.”

Duane Moody
“What are your anticipations for this whole tournament?”

Billy Musa Jr.
“If everything works out, we are hoping that Michael Meighan, who is our champ, should be able to get into the finals. More than likely he will face off with Enrique Bautista. I do know that we have two good players out of the U.S., like I’ve mentioned. They are also two players that they will need to contend with. But, all in all, I think the players that should advance to the semi-finals, each of them will have a chance to win if they play well. It’s up to them.”

The tournament has never been won by a Belizean, but Musa says that he hopes that our national champ, Michel Meighan will capture the first prize. The tournament is scheduled to begin at five in the evening on Friday and continue through Sunday at the Pickwick club. Entrance is free.
