Officials say suspect importers were under the eye of Customs
And as to the reason why the containers had not been owned up or cleared for two to three weeks, well law enforcers believe that their stringent eyes may have scared away the quote importers.
Colin Griffith, Collector for Customs
“I do believe that the main reason for this is that Customs have increased their enforcement targeting and we have been having a certain degree of success. It may not appear so to the public because of what has occurred but we know what we’re doing.”
Gerald Westby, Commissioner of Police
“I think it has been a combination that because Customs’ check and balance has been more stringent, so they have been careful on how they come to clear them. So I think that was probably one of the reasons, yes. You see that we have been investigating, we have made some arrests. Obviously, there are inside collusions and arrests were made of custom officers and obviously, they made a law to prohibit the importation of these stuff but we need to look at the whole system and see how best we can further improve.”
