U.D.P. infighting spreads to San Pedro
In news of a political nature, you would know of the infighting in the Belize City Council between the Mayor and her councillors. Now it seems that the next U.D.P. battle is not on St. George’s Caye but on San Pedro Ambergris where sparks are flying over convention rules. The party’s San Pedro Executive is meeting tonight to finalize the voting process for the upcoming town council and mayoral convention and some U.D.P. supporters are also planning to take the opportunity to demonstrate at that meeting. Mayor Elsa Paz has written to party officials to have her name removed from their slate in protest of the U.D.P. Secretariat’s decision to hold their convention in a way she feels is not a true reflection of the democratic process. Demonstrators who favour Paz will be protesting the new rules and show solidarity with Mayor Paz. And if the U.D.P. hierarchy has its way, the new rules will allow each candidate only ten delegates to vote at the convention. Paz is reportedly of the view that the convention must be open to vote to all members of the U.D.P. Paz, who is well liked in the island, has not yet received a reply about her withdrawal from the U.D.P. slate.
