Body of Peace Corp Volunteer found dead in Hopkins

From Belize City to the south from where details are still coming in, but there are initial reports surrounding the death of a Peace Corp volunteer in the village of Hopkins. According to information to News Five, around ten this morning the decomposing body of a seventy one year old, peace Corp volunteer, Bertie Murphy, was found in her one-bedroom cabana located on the North side of the Village. According to villagers, the volunteer was last seen on Friday, September fifth at the library where she worked and it was today one of her neighbors, also an American national, saw flies at the back window and alerted the police who accessed the cabana and found her in bed. There are conflicting reports and it is believed that the woman may have died of natural causes but police are not ruling out foul play as the woman was reportedly found without any underwear. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow morning. Murphy, who was originally from Virginia, was just beginning her second year of service at the Holy Family School. During that year, she has started a school library which was incidentally the location that she was last seen alive. She was known by villagers to be a “love teacher” who worked great with the children.
