Erotic Mas Band joins in the outcry against crime
Another organization that has joined the chorus against violence is the Erotic Mas Band. The violence hit close to home as one of their revelers was badly beaten that same day in an unrelated incident. Tonight, they’re saying a strong message needs to be sent.
Valerie Woods, Fundraising/Marketing, Erotic
“We roped off our band and we had people holding these ropes, but one of the spectators or a couple—we’re not so sure how many—did attack one of our revellers, brutally so where he was just knocked out cold. He is okay, we’ve checked on him.”
Kendra Griffith
“What was the justification for the attack?”
Valerie Woods
“We are not so sure. We know that a bottle was thrown at the reveller and the person or persons jumped the rope and attacked the reveller. Some of our band members tried as best as they could to hold off the kicking and the punching that ensued afterwards. It has really gotten to a level where all of us have to be concerned, every citizen; it’s not just the police force any more. We need to sort of send a strong message that we do not condone it, we condemn it strongly. We urge our fellow bands in carnival to do the same along with the carnival association and yes, because it’s the September celebrations, it is supposed to be a festive month, it is supposed to be a time when you can bring your family out, children out and clearly it is going to send a damper, as we, David and I, and the rest of the band have already received many phone calls that guys, we’re with you, but we don’t know if we’ll do this again next year, September tenth and twenty-first, have no idea if they are coming out again. And we’re a band that encourages a lot of people to support every activity in September, so we are concerned about that.”
